As part of the Inclusive Higher Education Toolkit, this project developed the Inclusive Higher Education Canvas. This is a visualization tool that provides a holistic overview of the key aspects of an inclusive higher education institution. It is a tool for reflecting on the current (and possibly future) inclusive policies and practices. The Canvas is organized into 9 puzzle pieces, which represent the 3 core dimensions of the Inclusive Higher Education Framework (policies, practices, and accessibility). Each dimension consists of 3 standards, which guide discussions and analysis of the inclusive profile of a higher education institution:
- Policies: National level, Regional level, University level
- Practices: Administration, Curriculum, Teaching and Learning
- Accessibility: Physical, Digital, Social and Attitudinal
Ideally, the Inclusive Higher Education Checklist should be completed before using this Canvas. The Inclusive Higher Education Framework is also a good source and support for reflection.
How to use the Canvas:
- Set your institution’s goals
- Print the Canvas in poster format
- Individually or in teams discuss each standard (you can go through all the standards or focus on the standards that the Checklist has indicated as most urgent)
- Use markers and Post It notes to document the results of your discussion
- After filling the puzzle pieces, discuss the whole canvas and concentrate on its consistency
- Continue with the Inclusive Higher Education SWOT-analysis to define strengths, weaknesses, challenges and opportunities or go straight to the Inclusive Higher Education Strategy Worksheet to list next steps, milestones, and timeframes.
